further doodlings…

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

My original goal of 1 doodle a day sure didn’t last long. I think I got about 3-4 days. But from a lengthy absence I present not one but TWO doodles/sketches. I could say I’ve been busy but that would be a lie, I can only fill out so many applications every day before I lose attention. I’ve recently past the twenty mark though! Apparently you are supposed to apply to at least 5 jobs a day but I’ve found that to be a bit difficult in a small place like Asheville. Hopefully something will pan out soon. As might be apparent from the following two sketches, I’ve been exploring beards/mustaches and hats a bit. I shaved the other day and tried out a mustache for all of 10 minutes, truly horrifying is all I can say. I will save you the discomfort and not post a photo.

I really hate the hat in the second one but whatevas.

A new home…

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Asheville is now my home. A long time in the coming it has finally happened. The new house is great, and in a nice spot just north of downtown, while no west Asheville it will do for the near term. Currently up front on the to-do list is to find a bike, i left mine back in ny, not sure if a fixie or a decent road bike would be better here, i like the fixed but there’s some massive hills here. I also found out today that Asheville has 8-12 rainy days out of every month not exactly prime biking conditions but much better than the 15-18 rainy days on average of my home town Portland, OR. I already miss NYC and biking around its streets so I hope to find something soon.

Private Spaceflight

Monday, September 29th, 2008

So I’ve always been a fan of space and zero gravity. I once flew up in a two seater dual yoke cessna and got to fly it a bit and do a dive to experience a few seconds of simulated zero gravity. All I can say was that it was over way to quick. Today marks the first time that a private rocket has reached outer space. I hope that within my lifetime Virgin Galactic and other space options become affordable for a wide class of consumers. Currently the $20 million or so it costs to have a ride up on a Soyez capsule is beyond the reach of me and everyone I know.  You can watch the SpaceX launch here:

La hasa shitan!

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Having just returned from Israel/Jordan. Jordan by far my favorite of the two, and I learned a bit of Arabic. Apparently this is not a universal phrase. Some friends I was traveling with tried to use the same phrase in Egypt to blank stares. At least among the Bedouins in Jordan the phrase “la hasa shitan” directly translates to “the devil licked it” but the way we learned it was sitting down for some tea and a light lunch of pita and sardines. It was during Ramadan but fortunately for us our Bedouin guide and his son had broke fast a few days earlier and once you break it you can’t start again. But to get back to “la hasa shitan” it came up when one of us accidently dropped a bit of pita on the ground and tried to pick it back up, apparently Bedouins haven’t heard of the “5 second rule” even going so far as to declare not just that the pita is unfit to eat after having touched the sand but that “the devil licked it”.

I leave you with another one of my doodles.
